Press Interview about North-Korea Nuke Test

October 9, 2006

Thank you all for taking time out of your busy schedule to be here with us.

At this moment, it is my privilege to give public statement for North-Korea Nuke Test as president of Korean-American Federation of Los Angeles.

As you definitely know, on October 9, the apparent nuclear test was conducted at 10:36 a.m. (1:36 a.m. GMT) in Hwaderi near Kilju city, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported, citing defense officials.

I recognize this Nuke Test by North Korea is a serious provocative act and agreed that Korea and the U.S. would closely coordinate and continue to make diplomatic efforts to resolve the problems.

Despite Korea Government¡¯s repeated warnings, North Korea proceeded with this Nuke Test, which is an unwise act to have a negative impact. It would not only deepen North Korea's international isolation by bolstering the stance of the hard-liners against the North in the international community but also impede the peace and stability of Northeast Asia by providing grounds for a buildup of armaments in the region as well as adversely affecting the attitude of the South Koreans toward the North in terms of inter-Korea relations.

North Korea should take all responsibilities for any situation that may arise from this Nuke Test.

In this regard, the Korean-American whom live in United States, emphasize that this Nuke issue could not be extended, and hope that North Korea discontinue such provocative acts.
